Most heatsinks are made from high thermal conductivity metals such as aluminum or copper. A heatsink is a passive cooling component designed to absorb and dissipate heat generated by electronic or mechanical devices. It works by transferring heat from a high-temperature component into a larger surface area, where the heat is released into air or liquid cooling mediums.

They are widely applied in devices such as CPUs, power electronics, LED lighting, automotive control units, and industrial equipment. A properly designed heatsink can significantly extend component lifespan by efficiently transferring heat away from sensitive parts and dissipating it into the surrounding environment.

 

How Does a Heatsink Work?

A heatsink operates through three fundamental heat transfer mechanisms:

Conduction: Heat moves from the electronic component into the heatsink base

Convection: Heat is dissipated into surrounding air or coolant flow

Radiation: A small portion of heat is emitted as infrared energy
